Despite the pandemic and the state order for New Jerseyans to stay at home, many of us who are employed don’t have savings and need to survive, so we must work. Some, but not all of us, can do our jobs from home. But the non-essential nature of many businesses means thousands of people have lost or will lose their jobs because of the coronavirus outbreak. To help those who feel that they have no choice but to find work outside the home, despite the potential danger, the New Jersey government offers a list of essential businesses looking for employees.
The State of New Jersey COVID-19 Jobs and Hiring Portal is a hub designed, as the government’s website says, “to match talent with opportunities in industries on the front lines of serving New Jerseyans during the outbreak.” Specifically, the portal aims to reach people who have lost jobs or are getting fewer work hours because of the pandemic. The site presents thousands of immediate-hire openings for essential operations, most of them for health care facilities, food and convenience stores, and delivery services.
Among those represented on the website are: Instacart, Shop-Rite, CVS Health, Kings Supermarkets, Lowe’s home improvement stores, Community Options, Inc., FedEx, and the Port Authority of NY and NJ. Businesses in urgent need for workers related to COVID-19 can submit information about openings at jobs.covid19.nj.gov/intake
